The World’s First Solar-Powered Family Car

Stella

(T)  TechCrunch had its 8th Annual Crunchies Award at the San Francisco Symphony’s Davies Hall this week. You can read everything that happened at the event on the TechCrunch’s site. I was delighted to see that the Best Technology Achievement was given to the young engineering team from Eindhoven in the Netherlands that designed Stella the world’s first solar-powered family car (I guess that all those words are necessary to support the marketing claim!). While at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, every car manufacturer was announcing future self-parking and self-driving cars, I did not see a lot of announcements about solar-powered cars. And while self-parking and self-driving cars must have a place in our future transportation system so do solar-powered cars. And, please do not tell me that the growing production of shale oil should change that picture!

To see Stella on the road:

And let’s not forget that while we do need solar-powered cars, we also need solar-powered planes. Solar Impulse is just getting to start its first round-the-world solar flight:
