(E) According to the IEA (International Energy Agency), the production of coal has reached a new peak in 2022 surpassing 8 billion tonnes for the first time. The IEA expects that global coal demand to plateau in 2025, but that really depends on the consumption from China.
Key consumers in 2022 were:
- China: 4,250 Mt
- India: 1,103 Mt
- Other Asia countries: 898 Mt
- United-States: 465 Mt
- European Union: 478 Mt
- Rest of the world: 831 Mt
To have a production compatible with 1.5 °C or 2 °C, according to the 2021 Production Gap of the UN Environment Programme and other environmental organizations, the production should be lower than 6 billion tonnes:

We are continuing our path toward extinction!
