Robert Badinter and Jacques Delors

(E) France and Europe have lost recently two outstanding political leaders: Robert Badinter and Jacques Delors. Mr. Badinter, as the Minister of Justice, led the abolishment of the death penalty in France in 1981. Mr. Delors, as President of the European Union, led the the free movement of persons, capital, and goods, and services within the European Economic Community (EEC) known as the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, and the creation of a single european currency: the “ecu” which was renamed the “euro”, introduced in 1999.
